Butler, an East Hanover resident who was a native of Cedar Grove, spent 17 years with the Essex County's Sheriff's Department and was known for lighting up a room with his laughter and quick wit, his obituary reads.
He loved being outside with a book in his hand, listening to Elvis and The Beatles, and with his dog, Bonez, who predeceased him, according to his obituary.
He is survived by his wife Diane, his children, Danielle and Anthony, and numerous siblings, in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A fundraiser has been set up to assist the family with funeral costs. As of Wednesday, May 17, almost $9,000 has been raised.
